L-Arginine for Exercise: Benefits, Dosage, and Safety

L-arginine is often marketed in pre-workout supplements for better blood flow, muscle pumps, endurance, and recovery. The idea sounds straightforward: arginine helps the body make nitric oxide, nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels, and increased blood flow should improve exercise performance.
The last step, however, is not well established. L-arginine does participate in nitric oxide production, but research does not consistently show that taking an arginine supplement improves strength, endurance, or post-workout recovery.
What Does L-Arginine Do in the Body?
L-arginine is an amino acid involved in protein production and several metabolic processes. Your body normally makes arginine, and you also get it from protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, beans, soy, nuts, and whole grains.
One reason arginine attracts attention in sports nutrition is its role as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide helps blood vessels relax and widen.
In theory, greater vasodilation could increase blood flow and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to working muscles. That biological mechanism is reasonable, but it does not automatically mean that taking more arginine will improve a workout.
According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), studies have generally found little to no effect of supplemental arginine on nitric oxide levels, blood flow, or exercise-related metabolic markers, particularly in trained athletes.
Does L-Arginine Improve Workout Performance or Recovery?
This is where the evidence becomes mixed.
A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis reported possible improvements in some aerobic and anaerobic exercise outcomes after arginine supplementation. However, a methodological critique published in 2025 identified problems in that meta-analysis that could have distorted its pooled results. This makes its positive conclusions less convincing as evidence for routine supplementation.
The broader NIH assessment remains more cautious. ODS reports that studies using roughly 2 to 20 grams of arginine per day have generally shown little to no improvement in aerobic or anaerobic performance. Research also provides little scientific support for taking arginine to increase strength or improve muscle recovery after exercise.
That does not mean every study has produced a negative result. It means the results are not consistent enough to assume that an arginine supplement will noticeably improve your workout.
Fitness level also matters. Many studies have involved small groups of young, trained men, so the findings may not apply equally to women, older adults, beginners, or recreational exercisers.
How Much L-Arginine Should You Take per Day?
There is no single standard supplement dose that every healthy adult needs to take.
It helps to separate three different numbers that are often confused:
- The amount of arginine naturally obtained from food
- Doses researchers use in clinical or exercise studies
- The serving size printed on a specific supplement label
The NIH reports that typical dietary intake is about 4 to 5 grams per day, but that refers to arginine naturally consumed as part of food—not a recommended supplement dose. Exercise studies have tested a much wider range, commonly from 2 to 20 grams per day.
For short-term safety, studies suggest that up to 9 grams per day for several days or weeks is generally well tolerated. At 9 to 30 grams per day, gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and diarrhea become more common, and blood pressure may decrease slightly. The safety of high-dose supplementation for longer than three months is not well established.
These research amounts should not be treated as a recommendation to take 9, 20, or 30 grams. Start with the actual Supplement Facts label and consider why you are taking the product before deciding whether the dose makes sense.
Should You Take L-Arginine Before a Workout or on an Empty Stomach?
Pre-workout products often recommend taking L-arginine shortly before exercise, and you may also see advice to take it on an empty stomach.
There is not enough consistent evidence to establish one ideal timing strategy for improving exercise performance.
Studies have used different doses, schedules, treatment periods, types of exercise, and participant groups. Because the results vary, there is no well-established rule that taking L-arginine 30 or 60 minutes before exercise will produce a better workout.
If you use an arginine supplement, follow its labeled directions rather than increasing the dose or changing the timing based only on pre-workout marketing claims.
L-Arginine Side Effects and Drug Interactions
Oral L-arginine can cause nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, headache, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. It can also lower blood pressure in some people.
Drug interactions deserve more attention than workout timing. Mayo Clinic lists potential interactions with:
- Blood pressure medications
- Nitrates used for chest pain
- Sildenafil
- Anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications
- Diabetes medications
- Potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone, amiloride, and triamterene
Depending on the combination, possible concerns include excessively low blood pressure, increased bleeding risk, changes in blood sugar, or elevated potassium levels.
L-arginine is also not recommended after a recent heart attack because of safety concerns. People with asthma or allergies should use caution because symptoms may worsen.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have cardiovascular or kidney disease, or regularly take prescription medications, discuss the supplement with your physician or pharmacist before using it.
Is L-Arginine Worth Taking for Exercise?
L-arginine has a clear biological role in nitric oxide production, but that is not the same as proven improvement in gym performance.
If your main goal is more strength, endurance, muscle recovery, or a stronger workout “pump,” current evidence does not support treating L-arginine as a reliably effective performance supplement. Some individual studies have reported benefits, but the overall research remains inconsistent.
Before buying a product, check the amount of L-arginine per serving, total daily serving recommendation, other active ingredients, and possible medication interactions. A larger dose is not automatically more effective, and higher intakes are more likely to cause gastrointestinal problems.
For most people considering L-arginine specifically for exercise, the useful question is not simply “How many grams should I take?” It is whether the expected benefit is supported well enough to justify taking the supplement in the first place.
